I choose the Princess, she has come to this place to seek a suitor to take over her father’s throne after he dies, but she comes to find a place where all the available men have decided to take an oath to study for three years with no women. In Scene two she realizes that all of her ladies have fallen love with one of the men even with the decree. She also suspects that the men feel the same way, when Boyet bursts in and confirms her suspicion she feels relief. The Princess feels trapped with her only option to keep the throne being to marry a man of the court and having been told no. She decides that if the men are going to come and try to disguise their identities she is going to play the game too. “And will they so? The gallants shall be task’d: For, ladies, we will everyone be mask’d…” I imagine she feels she has an upper hand because the men will be easily recognized by their size and stature the women probably look very similar without their faces. And if the men think they can toy with their love, the women will play coy. This is a means to an end with a benefit of romance involved, but she has to feel very relieved.
The trace of truths verses lies in the play, first with the deal with Costard in the forest with a wench, breaking the oath, he tries to deny it because of the way the letter was written but in the end is punished. Another big truth and lie is whether or not all the men are holding true to their oath, we can see the men slowly falling in love as they see the women. Each of the men eventually fall but Boyet tries to remain pure, instead he writes a letter to his beloved. When the letter is delivered to the wrong person, they discover his deception. He tries to deny it but the man is in love, so this means their quest for truth and knowledge have failed because the men have been seduced. The play implies that love will occur with or without truth, but a love made without pretense is a better and truer love. Where the lovers don’t have to make power plays or deceive one another to make them fall in love. When love is open it is more welcoming and trust worthy. Truth and language also go hand in hand, if you have many veiled words and half-truths it leads to confusion. Everyone is less confused when the words and explicit. But admitting that you don’t know works too. Dull. “Nor understood none neither, sir.” If the play was written like this it would be so easy but then we wouldn’t get to be so proud when we understood it :D. Human nature is I believe naturally evil, but it shows how one can possess higher thinking and take the truth and set it free! When there is no pretense it is easier to live together. As the saying goes “Secrets don’t make Friends.” This is a good summarization of the play, if we can’t speak plainly we don’t get along.
Adverb Clause is a chunk of a section of a sentence that contains a descriptive adverb. And a list with a colon, is for designating that it is a type of sub category of the list.
