IRA 9

So Catch-22, that thing Liam talks about all the time and likes to reference it to everything!  Well I finally read what it actually is. This is what the madness is all about. “There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn’t have to; but if he didn’t want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.” At first I was like “whoa what?” Then you read between the lines, Yossarian who was deathly afraid of flying more missions was classified as “sane” and Orr who was not afraid of flying missions so he was “insane”. Even though it is true that Orr was simply a simple fellow who didn’t know enough to be afraid which would not make him crazy. So understanding this makes the line of the story line of the book easier to comprehend. So this whole story is about how Yossarian wants to overcome this catch, but because that he is actually “sane”. So this adds up to be that Yossarian will never be able to win his battle against his nemesis which is the commander that keeps putting him in missions. Because he can’t prove that he is actually crazy to get himself out of the missions. So seeing how he will manipulate the situation in a way that will help him will be an interesting feat.
